What does phyto-cosmetics mean?

Phyto-cosmetics are made from various parts of plants and herbs, or oils extracted from them. Modern phyto-cosmetics apply a specific active ingredient of a given plant, which exerts a targeted effect. While a plant extract has a global effect, the extracted specific active ingredient from the plant focuses specifically on a particular problem, such as sun protection or alleviating dehydrated skin conditions.

Animal Welfare

Today, we know that it is not necessary to keep animals captive and experiment on them to understand how a cosmetic works, how the skin reacts to an eye cream, or whether an exfoliating disc will be effective. To produce cruelty-free cosmetics, manufacturers employ alternative testing methods.
Before a phyto-cosmetic product reaches the shelves, it undergoes microbiological, dermatological, and nickel tests, which are conducted by specialists.
The following tests are performed:
- Patch Test: The active ingredient is applied to the skin with a patch to check for any skin irritation.
- Shelanski Test: The potential irritating or sensitizing effect on the skin is examined by applying a patch multiple times a day.
- Eye Sensitivity Test: Conducted in vitro on human tissue samples to determine whether a cosmetic product damages human cell membranes.
Objective tests are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Vagheggi phyto-cosmetics, measuring hydration, wrinkle depth, skin elasticity, pigmentation spots, and sebum quantity using various tools. Subjective tests involve selected participants answering different questions to assess the optical and tactile changes they perceive on their skin when using Vagheggi phyto-cosmetics.
The challenge test measures the microbiological stability of the product. In this test, the cosmetic product is contaminated with various bacteria to test its resistance. This test helps determine the shelf life of the cosmetic product.

Vagheggi products are 100% Made in Italy, developed, tested, and manufactured in our laboratories in Italy. Cosmetic testing on animals has been banned in the European Union since 2004, and since 2009, testing of cosmetic ingredients on animals has also been prohibited. Since March 2009, the sale of cosmetic products containing ingredients tested on animals has been prohibited in the EU. Thus, the fact that our products are exclusively manufactured in Italy guarantees that they are cruelty-free cosmetics.

Our BIO+ product line is certified COSMOS ORGANIC and VEGAN.
WHAT DOES COSMOS ORGANIC MEAN? The standard defines the requirements that must be met for a cosmetic product to be considered organic and natural. The entire production process is checked in terms of sustainability, respect for biodiversity, responsible use of natural resources, and protection of human health and the environment.
The cosmetic formulas of the Bio+ product line are defined based on the standards of vegan cosmetics. The vegan cosmetic certification guarantees compliance with the rules of the vegan lifestyle, paying particular attention not only to non-animal-derived ingredients but also excluding possible contamination during the collection of these ingredients.
When it comes to packaging, our goal was to consider the aesthetic needs of users while also adhering to the Bio Vagheggi philosophy:
- Using "Shiro Alga Paper," an innovative eco-friendly paper made from lagunal algae, with FSC certification.
- No paint or glue was used, and the information is displayed on the entire surface of the packaging. We removed the information leaflet/label and utilized the entire packaging surface for displaying information.
- The jars and bottles are made from "ultralight" glass, which reduces their environmental impact and is easily recyclable; the tubes are made from biomaterial, vegetable-based PE, produced without GMOs, by fermenting brown sugar collected in Brazil, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions during production; they are certified with the "I’m green" label.
Sustainable packaging materials at Vagheggi
Since 2022, the company has set even stricter requirements for itself regarding sustainability because our ecological footprint is something we cannot ignore. Following this principle, the packaging of our Rehydra product line was renewed first, and within 2 years, the packaging of all our products will undergo similar changes.
- FSC MIX certificate: Ensuring appropriate forest management and traceability of materials. The material for our boxes is recycled and FSC-certified paper.
- The coloring agents are all made from recycled plant-based ingredients, do not contain minerals, solvents, or heavy metals, and are free of dyes.
- They are made from durable paper according to the ISO 9706 standard, guaranteeing their long-term usability.
- Cellulose is bleached using eco-friendly methods, minimizing the use of chlorine.
- Free from heavy metals and toxic substances (cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead).
- No acids are used for paper gluing.
- Environmentally friendly and easily recyclable, lightweight glass. Refills designed for creamy texture allow for multiple uses of the jars.
- No additional instructions made of paper and no plastic spatulas are used.
Supporting Local Women's Communities
We also pay great attention to supporting local women's communities in addition to fair trade policies when sourcing ingredients, such as the special Mexican arnica extract used in Rehydra products. It is a multifunctional active ingredient with innovative action mechanisms to support skin hydration, representing a new milestone in Vagheggi's sustainability project.
The Cuateteco plant is collected by members of the "Mujeres y Ambiente" women's association. The Mexican arnica extract they obtain has received the first world recognition from the IRCC (INTERNATIONAL Recognized Certificate of Compliance) because it is committed to caring for nature, preserving it, and respecting local heritage. Additionally, with the support of the local university, the project has been expanded to contribute to improving the quality of life of local women in difficult situations and ensuring a safer future for farmers.
Upcycled Beauty - Waste-Free Ingredients
At Vagheggi, the careful selection of ingredients is a primary consideration when choosing raw materials, taking into account factors such as geographical origin, concentration of active ingredients, season, and harvesting method.
What is Upcycled Beauty?
The future of cosmetics lies in extracting valuable active ingredients from non-utilized agricultural and food industry waste, using the skins, husks, peels, and leftovers of aesthetically unappealing fruits. In this way, cosmetic ingredients are extracted from plant waste, which often contains concentrated active ingredients in rich plant substances.
In addition, our products follow the Clean Beauty principle, meaning that individual ingredients, silicones, silicone derivatives, pollutant marine ingredients, and ingredients that are no longer necessary for formula stability have been replaced with plant-based active ingredients. Thanks to continuous innovation, these are exceptionally suitable for creating even higher-performance modern textures that meet the increasingly demanding consumer needs.
I LOVE CORALS – Environmental Protection Sunscreen
Taking into account the agreement on Hawaiian reefs, Vagheggi has developed a holistic and sustainable sunscreen product line, based on plant-based ingredients and formulas that respect nature and optimize skin protection while guaranteeing safe, radiant tanning. All our sunscreen products bear the "I LOVE CORALS" logo, which also expresses the company's vision of sustainability and responds to the growing ethical awareness.
We have employed an innovative protective system that includes three biodegradable chemical sunscreens and one mineral sunscreen, optimally dosed to ensure proper UVA and UVB protection. The sunscreen creams do not penetrate the skin, are photostable, and provide long-lasting protection.
The Summer Paradise series was developed by searching for the best biodegradable preparations with minimal impact on marine life while protecting both the skin and the seas. On average, Vagheggi sunscreen products are 75% biodegradable, and their impact on the environment is negligible.

Vagheggi developers obtain excellent and strictly controlled raw materials from the world of nature, including over 300 active ingredient extracts, essential oils, molecules extracted from flowers, plants, roots, algae, and mineral trace elements, as well as other ingredients selected based on skin tolerance.
